Writing Center

The Writing Center offers free writing support to all Pitt students — undergraduate and graduate — as well as to faculty and staff. It is one of the oldest and most distinctive programs at the University of Pittsburgh, and it is a central part of what the Writing Institute does.

What the Writing Center Offers

Writing Center consultants work with writers at any stage of a project — from early brainstorming through final revision. Sessions are collaborative: consultants don't edit your work for you, but they will help you think through your ideas, develop your argument, clarify your prose, and figure out your next steps. You can bring academic writing, creative writing, digital projects, or professional materials such as cover letters, personal statements, and applications.

Consultations are available in person and online. The Writing Center is staffed by faculty who actively teach writing and by undergraduate peer tutors who complete a year of training, which means you are working with people who think seriously about writing and about how to help writers improve.

How to Make an Appointment

Schedule an appointment through the Writing Center's online scheduler. You can choose the date and time, the consultant you'd like to work with, and whether you prefer an in-person or online session. If you haven't used the scheduler before, you'll be prompted to create an account.

The Writing Center and the Writing Institute

The Writing Center is housed within the Writing Institute, which oversees writing support and writing instruction across the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. While the Writing Institute coordinates programs for faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and community writers, the Writing Center is the place students come for direct, one-on-one support with their writing.
